- Dick's Sporting Goods was started by Stack's father as a fish and tackle shop in 1948.
- Stack's father was working in an Army surplus store and the owner asked him to come up with a list of items for a fishing tackle business.
- When he gave the owner the list he told him he had no idea what he was doing. Dick, his father, was so upset he went to his grandmother to talk about it. She proceeded to give him her life savings of $300. This was the start of the company.
- Stack took the two stores his father had and grew it into what it is today. They also own Golf Galaxy and Field & Stream specialty stores.

SOCIAL ISSUES
- Stack led Dick's Sporting Goods' stance on pulling high-capacity gun magazines from their stores, and not selling to anyone under the age of 21. This decision
put him under fire from the NRA and gun supporters. - He continues to be active in the conversation, recently adding his support to new gun legislation to restrict sales with the HR8 background check bill. This stance led him to receive the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy’s “Force for Good Award,”.
- He does not regret this stance, he is quoted saying, "If we had a mulligan, we’d do it all over again," It has not hurt the company too badly, their stock shares are up 20 percent this year.
- The company estimates the policy cost them about $150 million in lost sales. Stack said, "It was worth it. The system does not work. It's important that when you know there's something that's not working, and it's to the detriment of the public, you have to stand up."
INTEREST IN YOUTH & WOMEN'S SPORTS
- Dick's Sporting Goods has started and invested in Sports Matter, a business created to fund youth sports teams. This program funds struggling and financially challenged youth sports programs. $105 million in grants and scholarships have been awarded through the program.
- Stack became involved when he saw a study that estimated that around 25% of public schools would have ended their sports programs due to funding.
- The idea for this program could be traced back to his father, Richard. When he was little the town's Little League program was not affordable for every family. Richard gathered local businessmen to fund the program and allow 180 extra kids to experience the sport.
- Stack is a firm believer that income inequality is a real problem in our country. He believes that one thing he can do is keep kids in sports, and therefore, keep them in school.
- The store operates Dick's Team Sports HQ, an all in one sports digital platform for youth sports.
- Dick's Sporting Goods has teamed up with sports figures to help provide youth with more access to sports. They have created the Sports Matter Advisory Board. It consists of "sports
figures including Arizona Cardinals football player Larry Fitzgerald, Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden, volleyball player Kerri Walsh Jennings, former NBA player Jalen Rose, golfer Annika Sorenstam and skier Lindsey Vonn." US Women's National Soccer Team Player Alex Morgan was part of the panel. - Dick's will match up to $1 million in donations made by customers from July 14 through September 13.
- Dick's Sporting Goods Foundation partnered with Carrie Underwood in 2014. She donated $500,000 to the program for grants to girls' youth sports teams.

- When speaking of Dick's Team Sports HQ, he stated they were in it to enable youth sports to grow and assist their core business, therefore they do not charge groups to use the program/app.
- Mr. Plummer recently announced a three-year technology partnership between Game Changer, a digital score keeping
app for baseball and softball teams, and the National Federation of State High School Associations. The partnership is to reduce injuries to young pitchers.
