METHODOLOGY
To identify the top Skills on the Amzon Echo Skills store, we began by exploring if popular tech publications had published any list on the topic within the last few months. Using this research path, we found an article on VentureBeat that discussed how users are rating and reviewing Alexa Skills. This article also listed the top ten most-rated Skills, which we used for the first half of the request. Further research along this path did not yield any new list to complete the top 20 list. We then turned our attentions to perusing the Skills store. Fortunately, we were able to sieve through the more than 30,000 Skills through Amazon's filter features. We filtered by requesting for only apps rated 4 and above, and used the number of ratings to select the remaining ten Skills. This approach also verified the top ten list we had taken from the VentureBeat article. We were able to provide all the requested information except for the number of users. In order to identify the number of users for each skill, we started off by visiting each Skill's developer website such as Invoked Apps LLC and Volley Inc., but none of the developer websites had any metrics on the number of users for their Skills. We also performed a press search for each skill across tech and PR websites such as TechCrunch and PR Newswire to see if any of the developers have done any recent publicity citing the number of users of their Alexa Skills, and also found nothing specific to each skill. For example, we found that Volley Inc, the developers of Song Quiz and Yes Sire "has amassed an audience north of 500,000 monthly active users across its suite of voice apps," but nothing in the article stated the number of users for each of the Skills it had developed. As such, we have annotated each "Number of Users" cell with "N/A."
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
From our research, we observe that 13 of the top 20 apps based on the number of user ratings are in the Music & Audio category, particularly apps meant to sooth users to sleep. Skills in the Games, Trivia & Accessories category followed with 6 skills in the top 20. This aligns with findings from Voicebot.ai, which shows that Music Skills have the highest average star rating of the top 100 most reviewed Alexa Skills, followed by Skills in the Games category. According to Voicebot.ai the average star rating for Music & Audio skills is 4.38, while the average star rating for Skills in the Games category is 4.13. In terms of average ratings of the top 20, all except TP-LINK Kasa have an average star rating above 4, of which 17 Skills have an average star rating of either 4.8 or 4.9. TP-LINK Kasa has an average star rating of 2.7 and stands as an outlier on this list. The range of the number of ratings between the most rated and least rated on the top 20 list is quite huge. Ambient Sounds: Thunderstorm Sounds in first place has 13,185 user ratings, compared with 1,016 user ratings for the 20th Skill on the list - Categories Game.
