Major trends in the casual mobile gaming category include increased global popularity, penetration of the commercial market, and potential for educational purposes.
15-25% of total global sales volumes in the gaming industry can be attributed to casual gaming.
In terms of total install numbers, the United States is the most active hyper-casual gaming market globally, followed by Brazil.

Casual games have become the most prominent mobile gaming app category globally. This success is mostly due to its simplicity, ease of use and addictive tendencies. Increased patronage and positive feedback by users of the app has inspired interest from EdTech companies and academic institutions in developing STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) learning programs.

Started off by searching for articles, media updates, surveys, reports and expert opinions on the major trends relating to casual mobile gaming globally. Our focus was on the most recent trends available within the mobile gaming segment.

Search led us to review and gaming platforms such as WEPC, Libring and Game Dr. That way, we found reports that contained gaming statistics and trends in casual mobile gaming.

Studied the reports, reviews and publications found, and extracted the latest and most reoccurring practices, events, and opinions within them. These reoccurring trends were categorized and listed out.

Searching for an overview of geographic trends, we visited technology news platforms such as Venture Beat, which provided insight into casual gaming statistics that were specific to countries and regions.

CASUAL MOBILE GAMING TRENDS
CASUAL GAMES HAVE BECOME THE MOST POPULAR ANDROID GAME APP
Regardless of the fact that casual games do not have the largest share of the gaming market, they have become the most popular mobile gaming apps downloaded globally. This is mostly a result of the short gaming sessions, and their very simple game mechanics. These mobile leisure tools have received universal acceptance among gamers, and are quite famous for their tendencies to induce addictive game-play in users. The growing popularity of these apps is expected to continue beyond 2019.

CASUAL GAMES HAVE PENETRATED THE COMMERCIAL MARKET
The introduction and success of viral casual games like Candy Crush and Angry Birds have led to the casual genre's penetration of the commercial gaming market, thereby making monetization possible. These apps now generate about $0.15 in revenue per active user. Casual games rank second, behind puzzles, in terms of estimated time spent per active user, and users have increasingly become willing to pay for this addictive experience.

The market share of mobile games within the global gaming industry is expected to experience growth from 54% in 2019 to 59% in 2021. Casual gaming is expected to grow similarly.

CASUAL GAMING SHOWS GREAT PROMISE FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES
Due to the ease with which these casual games are developed — smaller budgets required, shorter development timeframes needed, and the simplicity with which the apps are used — they have increasingly gained recognition as potential tools for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning programs. Models such as Chemtrix and CD4 Hunter have been released already, with Chemtrix being listed on Apple's top games list on the iTunes platform. High user ratings and reviews are largely responsible for this Apple listing.

It is expected that 2019 will see significant growth in commercial EdTech companies and academic institutions, and casual gaming is at the heart of this phenomenon.
