OVERVIEW
The estimated amount of candy consumed during Halloween is 214 million pounds, while the overall average amount of candy purchased during the Halloween season is 600 million pounds.

METHODOLOGY
The team first looked into publicly available information about Halloween candy consumption. From this search, we only found the average overall weight of candy purchased during the Halloween season. As we researched further, we found how much candy is consumed on the day of Halloween and how many people celebrate Halloween within the United States. With the given information we triangulated an estimate of candy consumption during the day of Halloween using this formula:

Total number of Americans celebrating Halloween (179 million) x the estimated weight of candy consumption within the day of Halloween (1.2 pounds)

With that, we arrived at an amount of 214,800,000 pounds. This makes sense because 50% of parents tend to keep some of the candy away from their children to consume later in the year. We then synthesized the given data and wrote this research brief.

HALLOWEEN CANDY CONSUMPTION
Here’s an astounding fact: the estimated amount of candies purchased during Halloween season amounts to a weight of 600 million pounds. The candy consumption on Halloween contributes to about 4-percent (or about 1.2 pounds) of the overall candy consumption per year. With the US population reaching a staggering 328 million this 2018 and an estimated 179 million of those Americans will be celebrating Halloween (with 41.1 million of those assumed to be trick-or-treaters aged 5 to 14), the estimated amount of candy consumed on Halloween day itself reaches an approximated 214 million pounds (214,800,000 to be exact). The reason that not all candies are being eaten on Halloween day is that 50-percent of parents will be keeping some of the candies to consume later in the year.

Moreover, a trick-or-treater collects about 11,000 calories worth of candy during that one night of Halloween, with children consuming from 3,500 to 7,000 calories of candy in that one single night. However, parents keep an eye on their children's candy consumption on Halloween night and in the weeks after, as only 30-percent of parents claim that they allow their kids to eat all their candy from Halloween. Also, there is a fun side in the exchange rate of Halloween candies. As seen in an article by Mashable titled as "The Unofficial Halloween Candy Exchange rate", a Snickers King size bar is equals to three ordinary sized snicker bars, a tootsie roll, and two smaller-sized snickers bar, and a Snickers peanut butter bar, is well, equal to every single candy that a trick-or-treater has. Seems fair.

The amount of money spent on Halloween candies, as reported by NRF, is about USD $2.7 billion for the year 2017. According to Value Penguin, the money spent on Halloween candies accumulate to about 30-percent of the total money spent for the Halloween season (USD $9.1 billion) in the years 2011-2017. The average money spent by each household on Halloween candies is USD $27.

Furthermore, Candy Corn aren't very nutritious either, with its serving size (19 pieces per bag in Halloween) containing 140 calories and 28 grams of sugar. Circus peanuts claim the number one spot for the worst candy to give treat-or-trickers, because peanut butter treats shouldn't be chewey.
CONCLUSION
