 HISTORY OF GRIME
Grime is a music genre that was first introduced in London in the early 2000s. Since then, it has spread throughout the U.K. and has become a British phenomenon rather than a London-specific phenomenon. The genre has roots in a variety of genres, including hip hop, garage, jungle, reggae, pop and club music. It is known for beats that maintain a tempo of about 140 bpm. Other prominent features include electronic sounds and rapping. Some have referred to grime as the intersection of hard-core techno and hard-core rap. Some early pioneers in this genre include Eskibeat, Lethal Bizzle, Kano and Dizzee Rascal. While grime has sometimes been lumped together with U.K. rap, artists in the genre dispute this, pointing out that U.K. rap is influenced by a wider set of references, including U.S. hip-hop while grime is rooted solely in British culture.

In the early years, grime music could only be heard on pirate radio in the U.K However, it has recently become more mainstream in the U.K. with artists like Wiley and Dizzie Rascal leading the genre into pop culture territory. The genre's move into mainstream started in 2003 when grime artist Dizzie Rascal became the first rap artist awarded the Mercury Prize, an award reserved for the best British music artists. The genre has recently started to bleed into U.S. hip-hop culture, but has not yet become prominent in the U.S. dues to some prominent U.S. artists, including Kanye and Drake, working with grime artists in recent years. These efforts have been controversial, with some seeing them as a door opening for artists in an underground movement being given a chance at mainstream stardom and others seeing it as prominent grime artists being unfairly relegated to being back-up artists.

Grime has been compared to the punk movement in the U.K. in the 1970s in terms of impact on the brutish music scene. Mykaell Riley, who led the first academic study on the genre, called it “The most disruptive cultural transformation of the British music industry since punk.”

Grime music is believed to have given voice to the experience of black British youth and has been a galvanizing factor in the U.K political scene, being credited as a major part of the grassroots effort that helped to prevent Prime Minster Theresa May from achieving an overwhelming majority in the U.K. parliament. Grime artists helped to mobilize youth in the country around the election, resulting in some unexpected wins for the labor party.
