Correction: 11 October 2026. This page replaces an outdated company profile and speculative claims about curing brain conditions or uploading thoughts.
A brain-computer interface connects measured neural activity with a computer system. Describing that interface as reading a person's entire mind adds a much larger claim. A demonstration should be understood in terms of the particular signal, task, participant and conditions tested.
In its PRIME study brochure, Neuralink described an investigational implanted system intended to help people with paralysis control external devices. The brochure concerns evaluation of safety and initial functionality. Permission to conduct a clinical investigation is not equivalent to proving a general cure or obtaining approval for every proposed use.
Read a demonstration in four layers
- Task: Was the person moving a cursor, selecting text or doing something else? State the actual outcome.
- Conditions: What training, assistance and equipment were required?
- Durability: Was the result maintained over time, and what problems or changes occurred?
- Clinical meaning: Did the result improve a useful activity for the participant, and how was that evaluated?
For example, a short video of successful cursor movement can demonstrate an interaction during that recording. It cannot by itself tell a viewer the average performance across days, the surgical risk, the amount of support required, or suitability for another person. Those questions need additional evidence.
Keep the source's role visible
A company's update is a primary source for what the company reports. It is not an independent assessment of all benefits and risks. When comparing evidence, look for the trial protocol, outcome definitions, reported adverse events and any peer-reviewed results. Be wary of a discussion that gives extensive attention to a future ambition but little information about the measured task.
This article does not describe a current treatment offer or determine eligibility for a trial. People considering research participation should use the study team's current materials and discuss the implications with their clinical team. Research status, recruitment and device authorisations can change after a historical announcement.
Check the endpoint of a brain-interface demonstration
A successful computer task is an endpoint that needs a definition: what was controlled, how accurately, for how long and with what assistance? It does not automatically establish a treatment for every neurological condition. A demonstration and evidence from a clinical study answer different questions.
The FDA's implanted-BCI guidance addresses testing and clinical-study design. For a hypothetical research reading sheet, record participant selection, intended use, adverse events and follow-up along with task performance. Keep company ambitions separate from the results actually reported. This update does not establish eligibility, approval or a recommendation for an individual patient.
