Global Warming Part 1

INSIGHTS
The existence of global warming can be proven through anthropomorphic greenhouse gas emissions, global temperature rise, warming oceans, glacial retreat, public beliefs, shrinking ice sheets, sea level rise, declining sea ice, ocean acidification, and other extreme events.
The harmful effects of global warming are poor air quality, declining ecosystems, negative human health effects, negative agricultural effects, heavy rains, strong tropical storms, heat-related deaths and illnesses, wildfires, coastal flooding, sea surface temperature, and ocean heat.

We have researched various credible and reliable scholar articles, governmental and organizational resources in the search for the existence and harmful effects of global warming. Factors like global temperature rise, anthropomorphic greenhouse gas emissions, and warming oceans are all compelling proof of its existence. As far as the harmful effects of global

Anthropomorphic Greenhouse Gas Emissions A scholar article published in the Wiley Online Library talks about global warming scenarios that show the effects relating to seeds and seedlings. Their study was specifically based on the Arabidopsis thaliana plant. There is indisputable evidence that anthropomorphic greenhouse gas emissions are directly affecting the warming on the climate system.

Global Temperature Rise NASA has published compelling evidence on their website supporting the existence of global warming/climate change. One of those factors is global temperature rise. The planets normal surface temperature has increased by 1.62°F since the end of the 19th century. It's been found that the reason for the temperature change is due to increased carbon dioxide levels and the production of other man made emissions.

Warming Oceans and Glacial Retreat The warming that is taking place is also affecting the temperature of the world’s oceans. It seems the ocean water has absorbed the brunt of the heat, which has caused a warming of more than .4° since around the 1970s. That warming is also causing a glacial retreat. Glaciers have been retreating across the world, this includes places like the Alps, Andes, and Africa, just to name a few.

The Public Still Believes in Global Warming/Climate Change According to an abstract published by Cornell University, there was a survey conducted in 2016 that asked respondents if they doubted the existence of global warming more than climate change. That study was conducted among Republicans and they answered “Yes” for climate change more often than for global warming. An internal memo written by Republican Frank Luntz told the Bush administration to talk about climate change rather than global warming because it was less frightening to the public.

Shrinking Ice Sheets According to NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have shrunk in size by 281 billion tons and 119 billion tons, respectively. It should also be noted that the overall

THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
rate of mass loss in Antarctica has tripled in the last 10 years. There has also been a decrease in total snowfall in most parts of the US.

Declining Sea Ice It has been found that both the length and thickness of the Arctic sea ice has rapidly declined in the last 20 or 30 years. In 2012 there was the smallest extent of Arctic sea ice in history. Also, the length of the melt season has become longer, and the ice has become thinner and more fragile. There has been some increase of extent levels in the Antarctic sea ice but the decrease in the Arctic overshadows it.

Extreme Events There have been record high temperatures while there hasn’t been any low-temperature record broken in many years.  Also, the US has been experiencing an overall increase in rainfall. There have been many extreme weather events across the world.

Ocean Acidification Since the start of the Industrial Revolution, there has been an increase in ocean acidity. That increase is yet another result of the excess carbon dioxide and other man made emissions being released out into the atmosphere. Since the atmosphere is laden with the chemicals is being absorbed into the upper layer of the oceans at a rate of 2 billion tons per year.
Poor Air Quality According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air quality can impact climate change as well as the reverse. The atmospheric warming associated with global warming can increase the ground-level ozone in several regions which, in turn, can cause issues with ozone standards in the future. Pollutant emissions like greenhouse gases can ignite changes to the climate.

Declining Ecosystems

Global warming is posing a huge threat to plants, animals and the locations they inhabit. The temperature changes are affecting plant growth stages, water quality, and animal migration patterns, in a negative way. One of the ways the ecosystem can be affected is through river flooding. This can disrupt the ecosystem by displacing aquatic life and speeding up soil erosion.

Negative Human Health Effects Research shows that global warming is affecting people’s health both directly and indirectly. The climate changes are causing more extreme weather, spreading infectious diseases and having a negative impact on air and water quality. Human health effects can also include stats like drowning as well as infections and injuries. The USGCRP published an assessment in 2016 that concluded that every American is vulnerable to the negative health impact associated with global warming.

Negative Effects on Agriculture According to the EPA, global warming can cause the change of crop planting dates as well as cause droughts and/or floods depending on the degree of the climate change. This may cause issues within the farming industry. Greenhouse gasses play a large factor in agriculture.

Image result for global warming gifHeavy Rains Research shows that the usual precipitation rate has increased worldwide. Since the early 1900s that rate has risen at an average of more than six percent per century in the US. But that percentage is only around two percent per century for the rest of the world. In the US, much of that precipitation has fallen during powerful single-day events. Those occurrences have caused the annual precipitation totals to rise.

Stronger Tropical Storms Intense tropical storms across the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean were not traditionally thought to be a long-term occurrence, but over the last couple decades, these types of storms have had a noticeable increase. The rise is attributed to the sea surface temperature in the Atlantic.

Increase in Heat-Related Death and Illnesses Since the late 1970s, there has been more than 9,000 US citizens that have died in heat-related deaths. That number can increase when including the interaction of heat and cardiovascular disease. There were also around 28,000 heat-related hospital admissions recorded among 20 states

CONCLUSION

between 2001 and 2010. The elderly seems to be the majority affected in both the cases of heat-related death and illness.

Wildfires The most recorded wildfires in US history have been since 2000. In general there are more wildfires that burn land on the West coast than does on the East coast. Low groundwater levels can cause vegetation to dry out and increase the chances of wildfires occurring. Another huge factor in wildfires is drought. Drought accounts for most wildfires that happen in the US.

Ocean Heat & Increase Sea Surface Temperature Multiple studies have shown that the heat content of the ocean has increased significantly since the 1950s. There is some year to year variations with the sea surface temperature but overall the constant rise is evident. The surface temperature has been increasing for more than 30 years.

Coastal Flooding There has been an increase in flooding along the US coastline. This is due to the rise in sea level caused by global warming. The flood rate seems to be increased around the East and Gulf coasts. As far as the Mid-Atlantic region, they have the highest number of flood days and has the greatest number of floods overall.
In conclusion, there are many harmful effects on global warming and climate change. The harmful effects range from poor air quality to floods and there are many effects that are caused by mankind. In the last years, the sea level has been increasing at an alarming rate.
