Your Pixel still works, the camera is fine, and yet the Pixel 11 adverts keep finding you. Is this the year to switch, or the year to keep the money?
The short answer: from a Pixel 10, no. From a Pixel 9, only if you want the bigger battery, magnets and faster charging. From a Pixel 8, yes if your battery is fading, because the jump in chip, battery, memory and support years is real.
What Google actually launched
Google announced the Pixel 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro XL on 12 August 2026 and put them on sale on 20 August. US prices start at $899, $1,099 and $1,299, and every model now starts at 256GB. In India the same three phones start at ₹89,999, ₹1,19,999 and ₹1,34,999.
A Pixel 11 Pro Fold with 16GB of RAM launched alongside them; Techloy reported its US price as $1,899 and ETV Bharat listed ₹1,86,999 in India. All of them run Google's new Tensor G6 chip with a Titan M3 security chip, and all get seven years of OS, security and Pixel Drop updates.
Google's own chip numbers are modest: 25% faster web browsing and 15% quicker app launches than the Tensor G5, from internal tests. The big claim is for AI work: 50% more compute and tasks up to 3.5 times faster.
Four generations side by side
The figures come from Google's hardware spec pages and its launch posts for the Pixel 8, Pixel 9 and Pixel 10. Update end dates follow Google's rule of seven years from the month each phone reached the US Google Store.
| Phone | Chip | RAM | Battery (typical) | Wired charging | Launch price (US) | Updates run to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 8 (Oct 2023) | Tensor G3 | 8GB | 4,575 mAh | Up to 27W | $699 | Oct 2030 |
| Pixel 9 (Aug 2024) | Tensor G4 | 12GB | 4,700 mAh | Up to 27W | $799 | Aug 2031 |
| Pixel 10 (Aug 2025) | Tensor G5 | 12GB | 4,970 mAh | 30W, 55% in 30 min | $799 | Aug 2032 |
| Pixel 11 (Aug 2026) | Tensor G6 | 12GB | 4,985 mAh | 30W, 55% in 30 min | $899 | Aug 2033 |
The pattern is clear. Pixel 10 to Pixel 11 adds 15 mAh, the same RAM and the same charging speed for $100 more. Pixel 8 to Pixel 11 adds 410 mAh, 4GB of RAM, three chip generations and three extra years of updates.
What the reviewers found
Reviewer opinions, not Google's claims. Engadget's Nathan Ingraham scored it 9.2/10 on 19 August, called the upgrade iterative for Pixel 10 owners, and said anyone with a Pixel older than last year's model would see a significant step up. His battery note: nearly two days between charges.
9to5Google's Damien Wilde, writing the same day, found the Tensor G6 "feels identical to the G5 day-to-day" and said it was tough to recommend to anyone with a working phone from the last two or three years.
Android Authority's Brady Snyder was blunter on 24 September: the base Pixel 11 is the only model without a vapour chamber, and he saw lag and overheating, with camera features switching off when the phone got too warm. His verdict: Pixel 10 users "definitely won't need to upgrade". Robert Triggs, on the same site, called the chip an efficiency and AI upgrade rather than a performance one.
For Pro buyers, Khaleej Times noted on 25 August that the Pro and Pro XL now start at 12GB of RAM, down from 16GB on the Pixel 10 Pro. Google's spec page confirms 12GB for the 256GB versions.
Where the real differences hide
Three things matter more than the spec sheet shows. Magnets: the Pixel 10 and 11 carry Pixelsnap for Qi2 charging, so a Pixel 8 or 9 owner gains a whole accessory ecosystem, and the Pixel 11 adds 25W Qi2.2. Camera: the Pixel 11's new 48MP main sensor gathers 56% more light than the Pixel 10's, by Google's measure. Time: every year you wait, your current phone has one fewer year of support left.
A Pixel 8 has four years of updates left; a Pixel 11 has seven. If you keep phones until the patches stop, that gap is the upgrade. Our guide to how long phones get security updates explains why the date matters more than the chip.
Upgrade or keep: a four-step check
- Check battery health in Settings. If the phone dies before dinner, a new battery or a new phone is justified. If not, move on.
- Find your update date in the table. More than three years left? Security is not a reason to switch.
- Ask what you miss. Magnets and 30W charging favour upgrading from a Pixel 8 or 9. Raw speed does not; reviewers found the Tensor G6 close to the G5 in daily use.
- Price it against a discounted Pixel 10, which has six years of updates left and the same charging speed. It is the quiet alternative most reviews point to.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Pixel 11 really $100 more than the Pixel 10?
At the entry price, yes: $799 became $899. But the Pixel 11 starts at 256GB, and Khaleej Times points out that a 256GB Pixel 10 also cost $899, so like for like the price held. The Pro XL rose $100 with no storage change.
Will my Pixel 8 stop getting updates if I keep it?
Not soon. Google's support policy gives Pixel 8 and later phones seven years of OS and security updates from the month they reached the US Google Store. For the Pixel 8 that is October 2023, so updates run to October 2030. Pixel Drop features are the part Google does not guarantee for the full term.
So: Pixel 10 owners keep their money, Pixel 9 owners decide on magnets and battery, and Pixel 8 owners with a tired battery have a good reason to buy. If none of those is you, the Pixel 11 will still be there in six months, probably cheaper.
