Explainer graphic: what Apple confirmed about the iPhone Duo, how it compares with the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a four-step wait-or-buy check
The foldable iPhone is no longer a rumour: what is confirmed, what is still reported, and how to decide.

For years, "foldable iPhone" meant a leaked render and an analyst's guess. That changed in September. If you are holding off on a new phone because a folding one might be around the corner, the corner has arrived, with a price tag.

The short answer: Yes, Apple is making one, and it is already on sale. It is called the iPhone Duo, it costs $1,999 in the US and INR 2,99,900 in India, and it went on sale on 23 October 2026. Whether you should buy it instead of a regular iPhone depends on how much you want a 7.6-inch screen in your pocket, and how much you mind Touch ID, a heavier phone and a long wait for stock.

What Apple has actually confirmed

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026. It is a book-style fold: a 5.4-inch outer screen when closed, a 7.6-inch inner screen when open. Apple calls it the thinnest iPhone ever when opened, uses a Grade 5 titanium frame, and rates it IP68 for dust and water.

The chip is the A20 Pro. There are two 48-megapixel rear cameras, Main and Ultra Wide, with what Apple calls an "optical-quality" 2x telephoto, meaning a crop, not a third lens. Unlocking is Touch ID in the side button or an Apple Watch; Face ID is not mentioned anywhere on the page. It is eSIM-only worldwide and ships with iOS 27.1.

Pre-orders opened on 16 October, sales began on 23 October in more than 70 countries including India, and 28 more countries followed on 30 October. US pricing on Apple's store runs $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB.

What the first reviews say

The 9to5Mac review by Chance Miller, published 21 October, calls the Duo the future of the iPhone, then says a traditional iPhone is still the practical choice for most people right now.

Three details stand out. The crease is "easier to feel than see," and anyone calling it invisible is, in his words, misleading you. Touch ID "feels like a step backward" after years of Face ID. And the main camera sits "a notch below the iPhone 18 Pro," with no dedicated telephoto lens. Battery life was fine: around 20 percent left at the end of most days, with the inner screen open about 60 percent of the time.

Can you even get one?

Probably not before 2027 if you order online. On pre-order morning, MacRumors reported that Apple's US store showed 25 January as the estimated shipping date for every configuration, within about an hour of opening. Apple told the Financial Times that demand was "nothing short of extraordinary", as iThinkDifferent reported, and said nothing about how many it had to sell.

So the real choice is not "Duo now versus iPhone 18 now." It is "Duo in a few months, iPhone 18 now, or the second Duo later."

What is still a report, not a fact

Apple has said nothing about a second foldable. In August 2026, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reportedly wrote that a second-generation model is planned for autumn 2027, alongside a 20th-anniversary iPhone, with a third generation and slightly larger screens possible in 2028. Back in May 2025, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted the same one-year gap.

Treat those as educated guesses: the same people were right about this model's price band and wrong about its name for months. A 2027 Duo is likely, not promised.

Wait or buy: a four-question checklist

  1. Do you want the big screen, or the idea of it? If you read, watch and split-screen on your phone for hours, the 7.6-inch panel is the point. If you mostly message and take photos, you are paying $700 more than an 18 Pro Max for a feature you will fold away.
  2. Can you live with Touch ID and no telephoto? Try a Fold-style phone in a shop and unlock it a dozen times. Zoom in on a distant subject. If either annoys you now, it will annoy you for three years.
  3. Is your current phone actually failing? If it is still on the iOS 27 list and the battery holds up, waiting for the reported 2027 model costs you nothing. If it is dying, a January delivery date is a real problem.
  4. Does the budget survive the extras? Add a case ($79) or Folio ($129), both of which work with MagSafe and Qi2 25W chargers. Apple's US trade-in credit runs $175 to $885 for an iPhone 13 or newer, which softens the number but does not change the category.

Frequently asked questions

Does the iPhone Duo have Face ID?

No. Apple's announcement describes Touch ID built into the side button, plus unlocking with an Apple Watch. There is an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen for calls, but no Face ID hardware is listed.

Is the crease visible?

Apple says a nano-texture finish "minimizes crease visibility," which is carefully not "removes it." 9to5Mac's reviewer rarely saw it head-on, did see it in bright light against dark screens, and could always feel it under a finger.

So: real, confirmed, expensive and sold out. If the folding screen is what you have been waiting for, join the queue with your eyes open. If you were only waiting because it might be coming, it has come, and a regular iPhone 18 is still the sensible buy.
