Your iPhone pinged last month with an iOS 27 banner, and a friend with a newer phone has been chatting to a Siri that actually talks back. Yours still sets timers and little else. So did you get the real update, or a watered-down one?
The short answer: iOS 27 installs on every iPhone from the iPhone 11 and the second-generation iPhone SE onwards, the same list as iOS 26. But the headline features, Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI, need an iPhone 15 Pro or any iPhone 16 or later. A few extras need a 17 Pro, Air, 18 Pro or Duo. Older phones still get speed, child-safety and security improvements.
Who gets iOS 27 at all
Apple released iOS 27 on 14 September 2026, five days after announcing the date at its iPhone 18 Pro event, as MacRumors reported. Apple's iOS 27 page lists the compatible phones: every model from the iPhone 11 through the iPhone 18 Pro Max, plus the iPhone Air, 16e, 17e, iPhone Duo and the iPhone SE from the second generation on.
That is the same list as last year. 9to5Mac noted at the June announcement that no model was dropped. The iPhone 11 arrived in 2019, so a seven-year-old phone is still on the current release. The iPhone XS and XR, cut last year, are still getting iOS 18 security patches, with 18.7.11 shipped on 26 October 2026.
What your phone gets depends on its chip
Apple splits iOS 27 features into three hardware tiers. Apple's Apple Intelligence page lists the models that run its on-device models: the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, every iPhone 16 including the 16e, every iPhone 17 including the 17e, the Air, the 18 Pro models and the iPhone Duo. The regular iPhone 15 and 15 Plus miss out.
Siri AI, the new assistant with its own app, follows that same list. One step up, custom Siri voices and the improved on-device Dictation need an iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, Air, 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max or Duo, according to Apple's footnotes on the iOS page.

Hardware is not the only gate. Apple calls Siri AI a beta, launching in English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, with other Apple Intelligence languages following. It is not initially available in the EU on iPhone, it is off for users under 13, and server-side features carry daily usage limits, with paid access planned later. A 16 Pro in Germany gets less Siri than a 16e in India for now.
What older iPhones still gain
If you own an iPhone 11 to 14, the update is not empty. Apple's own testing, cited on the iOS 27 page, claims app launches up to 30 percent faster on an iPhone 11 Pro Max compared with iOS 26.6, and Photos loading up to 70 percent faster on an iPhone 15. They are Apple's figures, but measured on older phones on purpose.
Every supported model also gets the child-safety overhaul: Ask to Browse in Safari, Time Allowances and Schedules, and redesigned parental controls. Add Liquid Glass refinements, better Mail search, Flyover in Maps and Custom EQ for AirPods. None of it needs a new chip.
The quiet win is security. Staying on the current release is the simplest way to keep patches flowing, as explained in our guide on how long phones get security updates. Apple also shipped iOS 26.7.2 on 26 October for anyone not ready to move, but that path narrows each year.
Five steps for owners of the oldest supported models
- Confirm your model. Open Settings, General, About, and read the Model Name. Anything from iPhone 11 or SE (2nd generation) up is eligible.
- Back up first. Apple's update guide says to back up to iCloud or a computer, then plug in and join Wi-Fi before installing. Updates cannot be rolled back once installed.
- Install from Settings, General, Software Update. If storage is tight, iOS may offer to remove apps temporarily and reinstall them afterwards. Say yes rather than deleting photos.
- Turn on Automatic Updates. In the same screen, set Automatically Install so point releases such as 27.2 arrive overnight while charging.
- Set a replacement window, not a panic date. As a rule of thumb, a phone that just made the cut has one or two major releases left. If Siri AI matters to you, a 16e or 17e is the cheapest door in.

Will the iPhone 11 get iOS 28 next year?
Nobody outside Apple knows. The iPhone 11 survived two cuts in a row, and Apple keeps shipping security fixes for dropped models, as the 2026 iOS 18 patches for the XS and XR show. Treat iOS 27 as a bonus year and plan calmly.
My iPhone 15 has the same screen as the 15 Pro. Why no Apple Intelligence?
