The most recent statistics are not available. However, as on 2014, there were a total of 82,000 beauty salons in the US. All of them offer hair coloring services. Apart from hair coloring, most beauty salons also offer a wide range of services. These include hair cutting and styling, shampooing, makeup, facial treatments, nail care, tanning, massage and spa treatments.

TYPES OF BEAUTY SALONS

Beauty salons generally come in two forms: specialized salons and full-service salons. Specialized salons focus on one or two areas of service. For example, a specialized salon might offer manicures, pedicures and facials, or hair cutting, styling, coloring, extensions and wig styling. A full-service salon offers everything from nail care and hair services to massages and other personal care treatments. The more services a salon provides, the more money a beauty salon owner can make.

THERE ARE A FEW CAVEATS TO THIS QUESTION WHICH I WILL LIST BELOW:

• Not all people who graduate from a cosmetology college with all their state required course and practicum hours take the state licensing tests.
• Some people who do graduate from cosmetology college and do take the state test, may not pass and do not become licensed, ever.
• Hairstylists who do finish cosmetology college, receive their license after the state licensing testing, may or may not actually practice their trade, either part-time or full time.
• Some hairstylists will work in the business for a range of years. Some will only stay in the trade for a short time.
• Stylists who are not actively working behind a chair or in a salon, may keep their educational requirements active in order to keep their license, but may not do much work with hair.

Clean cut: Rising consumer confidence and disposable income will foster industry growth

The Hair Salon industry has managed to untangle its early post recessionary knots. Rising consumer sentiment and per capita disposable income have boosted industry growth over the five years to 2017. This has also led to increased demand for ancillary services to standard haircuts, such as hair modification treatments (e.g. straightening procedures and perms), skin-care services and massages. In the coming years, the industry is forecast to exhibit continued growth. Per capital disposable income and consumer confidence will keep rising as the unemployment rate continues to decline, providing consumers with more discretionary income for luxury services at hair salons...purchase to read more.
