Correction: An earlier version of this page presented an unsourced list of foods and home remedies as protection against COVID-19. That advice has been replaced. It should not be used to delay testing or medical treatment.

Food is not a COVID-19 treatment

WHO reports no scientific evidence that lemon, turmeric or ginger prevents COVID-19. A varied diet can support general nutrition, but a drink or supplement should not be described as a cure. The previous claims about alkaline drinks, steam cleaning the lungs and oil forming a protective barrier were unsupported and have been removed. See WHO's fact checks.

Get appropriate care

People at higher risk of serious illness should contact a healthcare professional promptly when symptoms begin. Effective treatment can be time-sensitive; eligibility and available medicines depend on local guidance and the individual. See CDC's treatment information.

Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, persistent chest pain, confusion or other severe symptoms. Use your local emergency service; the unverified phone numbers previously listed here have been removed. CDC explains emergency warning signs.

How to assess a health claim

Check whether a claim concerns nutrition, symptom comfort, prevention or treatment: these are different outcomes. Look for a named public-health authority and an update date. A forwarded message, personal testimonial or professional title without a verifiable source is not enough to establish effectiveness.

This page provides general source guidance, not an individual diagnosis or treatment plan.
