Explainer graphic: what you lose and keep when switching from a smartphone to a dumb phone in 2026, the network dates to check, and a one-week trial plan
A dumb phone keeps calls, texts and text-message codes; WhatsApp, app-based UPI, authenticator apps and passkeys need a plan before you switch.

You picked up your phone to check the time and surfaced twenty minutes later in a stranger's kitchen renovation. A flip phone starts to look like a cure. Before you buy one, know exactly what stops working.

The short answer: you can switch, but only after a week of testing with the phone you already own. Calls, texts and text-message codes survive. WhatsApp, most banking apps, authenticator apps and passkeys do not live on a basic phone, so each needs a fallback. And whatever you buy must be 4G with VoLTE, because 2G and 3G networks are closing.

Why the dumb phone is a 2026 story

The makers are treating basic phones as a real market again. At MWC in March 2026, HMD announced a wallet, video calling and a voice assistant for its feature phones, with India first. In April 2026, Light opened a developer programme for the Light Phone III, so outside developers can build curated, non-commercial tools.

On 1 September 2026, PhonePe's UPI 123Pay arrived on seven HMD and Nokia feature phones, including the HMD 105 2G and Nokia 106. The trade-off is now specific, not total.

What you actually lose, phone by phone

Dumb phones come in two families. Budget feature phones, like HMD's Nokia 2660 Flip 4G, sell for about 5,000 rupees, with a camera, an emergency button and what HMD calls a limited selection of apps and no social media. Minimalist phones, like the Light Phone III, cost smartphone money: $699 on pre-order in June 2026.

Two details carry most of the pain. WhatsApp stopped supporting KaiOS flip phones such as the Nokia 2780 Flip and 6300 4G, and it now needs Android 5 or iOS 15.1 and newer. And Google's passkeys need Android 9, iOS 16 or a FIDO2 security key.

Check the network before the phone

In the UK, Ofcom says 3G is now switched off; EE starts closing 2G in May 2029, O2 in summer 2029, Vodafone during 2030, and everyone by 2033. A 2G-only handset still calls and texts for now, but Three customers with old devices lose everything.

Worldwide, the GSA counted 313 completed, planned or ongoing 2G and 3G switch-offs across 89 countries by June 2026. India has no national date; Jio has pushed for one while Vodafone Idea argued 2G still serves low-income users. Either way, buy 4G with VoLTE and check your carrier's bands; an "unlocked" label does not guarantee calls.

What the screen-time study actually showed

The study people quote is a randomised trial published in PNAS Nexus in February 2025. It did not hand anyone a flip phone. It asked 467 US and Canadian iPhone users to block mobile internet for two weeks while keeping calls and texts. Daily screen time fell from 314 to 161 minutes, and well-being, mental health and sustained attention improved.

Read the small print. Only 119 people kept the block active for ten of the fourteen days. Volunteers already wanted to cut back, most outcomes were self-reported, and nobody measured week three. Cutting mobile internet helped a motivated group; the device itself was never tested.

Try it for a week, then decide

Borrow the study's method, not its shopping list. Block mobile internet on your current phone for seven days, keeping calls and texts. Every time you reach for a missing app, write it down. By day seven you have your personal "lose" list, which beats any review.

Then sort the list into three piles: works by text or call, can move to a laptop, needs a smartphone or security key. The third pile decides whether you go all in, carry a second phone, or just buy a lock box for the one you have.

  1. Confirm the new phone is 4G with VoLTE on your carrier's bands, not a 2G or 3G leftover.
  2. Print Google's backup codes (ten single-use codes) and the equivalent for your bank and email.
  3. Add a FIDO2 security key wherever you use passkeys, so a lost or retired phone is not a lockout; the details are in our lost-phone passkeys guide.
  4. Decide where WhatsApp lives: a supported phone kept at home, or not at all.
  5. If you use UPI, check your model is on the 123Pay list, or set up a laptop route for payments.
  6. Keep the smartphone for a month before selling it. The week test can lie.

Frequently asked questions

Can a flip phone run WhatsApp in 2026?

Not the common ones. WhatsApp ended support for KaiOS phones, including the Nokia 2720, 2760 and 2780 Flip and the 6300 4G, in early 2025. The Light Phone III has no WhatsApp either. If WhatsApp is how your family talks, that is your deal-breaker, not screen time.

Does UPI work without a smartphone?

On specific phones, yes. Since 1 September 2026, PhonePe's UPI 123Pay runs on the HMD 105 2G, HMD 110 2G, Nokia 105 variants, Nokia 106 and Nokia 123 Shield, covering transfers, balance checks and recharges. Camera models can scan QR codes. HMD says more models are coming, so check the list before you buy.

So should you switch? If the third pile is short, a 4G feature phone costs less than a dinner out and gives you your evenings back. If it is long, the honest answer is a smartphone with the internet blocked, the only version anyone has actually measured.
